Vellios Takes Over MDC

The University of Pretoria Football Club Announces Evangelos Vellios as the new coach of the multichoice diski challenge team.

Vellios is a sport science graduate of the University of Pretoria and a former resident of Kollege te Huis. He played central midfield for Kollege in the TuksFootball campus league during his studies but had to hang up his boots after tearing ligaments in his knee. Born in Johannesburg, the 31 year old popularly known as "Van" grew up and went to school in Maputo, Mozambique. He took over the coaching of the student team from Sly Mosala in 2011 and won the 2012 and 2014 USSA Football National Club Championships as well as the 2013 and 2014 Varsity Football tournaments.

"It came as a big surprise to be appointed as the head coach of the MDC team. I have some very big shoes to fill after we won the inaugural tournament under the leadership of coach Mosala. The opportunity comes with huge responsibilities because it is a critical part of the development pathway for players in the club. I can only hope to have similar success that I had with the student team but this is great opportunity for me personally to lead the reserve team under the guidance of the AmaTuks technical team. We have worked very well together guiding the SAB league team as well as the student team but this is a whole other level and I am looking forward to the challenge. The priority for us is to create opportunities for our academy players and students to showcase their talents against professionals in the MDC. Looking at what they have been able to achieve over the past two or so years compared to the rest of their peers, I am confident they will hold their own in the MDC.

We practically have the same players in the various competitions so there is a lot of football to be played and I am very excited for the season ahead for all our teams;" said coach Van.

Van will be assisted by AmaTuks legend Brian Sebapole who has coached the u15 and u17 junior teams in the club. The 2014/2015 MDC winning coach Sly Mosala will play more of an oversight role for the team. Coach Van could make history by becoming the first coach to win the varsity football, the USSA Football National Club Championships as well as the Multichoice Diski Challenge.
