The University Of Pretoria beat the University Of Zululand 3-0 in the final of the USSA nationals, a brace from Mbongeni Masilela and a solitary goal by Botshelo Mfulwane secured the title.
The match began with Unizulu dictating terms as they had the lion’s share of possession and persistently attacked UP-TUKS. UP-TUKS began to get their rhythm and they had the first attempt at goal which came from Masilela through a shot from outside the box that went inches over in the 3rd minute.
Jeremiah Nkwana came close to opening the scoring after his effort went centimetres over in the 19th minute. UP-TUKS consistent attack resulted in Masilela opening the scoring in the 20th minute after his low shot was deflected into the net by a Unizulu defender.
UP-TUKS exerted their dominance over their opponents when AmaTuks striker Botshelo Mfulwane muscled his way through the defenders to comfortably place the ball into the net to make it 2-0 in the 22nd minute. Mbongeni Masilela completed his brace in the second half through an economic finish that left the keeper with no chance 8 minutes into the second half.
UP-TUKS calmly kept Unizulu at bay for the remainder of the match to win the trophy for the first time in 5 years. Jeremiah Nkwana and head coach Evangelos Vellios were the big winners in the team after they both walked away with the player of the tournament and coach of the tournament award respectively.
The UP-TUKS male team were crowned as the best team in the country as they came out first in the tournament whilst the ladies team were 8th after they crashed out of the tournament in the quarter finals.
