UP-TUKS are set to welcome fierce rivals, the Tshwane University Of Technology on Monday the 25th of July at the Tuks Stadium, kick-off is 19:00.
Many would perhaps consider this fixture as one the biggest sporting events in the Tshwane because of the rivalry that exists between the two institutions. Revenge is on the cards for UP-TUKS as they were knocked out of the competition by TUT last year in the semi-final stage.
Last year’s finalists TUT are coming from a narrow 2-1 win over Wits whilst UP-TUKS drew one all against defending champions UWC. Most football pundits would predict a draw for this massive encounter because the two giants have cancelled each other out in the past but if the first round of matches is anything to go by sparks are set to fly at the Tuks stadium on Monday.
Mbongeni Masilela is one of two players from UP-TUKS who have been there since the inception of Varsity Football and he stressed the importance of making sure that new players understand the magnitude of the encounter, “This is the biggest rivalry in student football and it shows how competitive student football can be. For the new players it is of paramount importance that they understand the history of the rivalry and how that match sets the tone of the whole competition. As Tuks we pride ourselves in excellence and my responsibility is to make sure that new players understand that it’s not about getting one over our rivals but making sure that we put ourselves in a position to win the title”.
