Despite a brave showing throughout the 90 minutes, AmaTuks went down 1-0 to Royal Eagles at the Tuks Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was AmaTuks who threw the first punches early in the match and in the 10th minute Gordinho wiggled his was past three defenders and surged into the penalty box only to be brought down as he was preparing to take the shot but the referee saw nothing wrong with the tackle and waved for play to continue.
A few minutes later Chapman received the ball from Leonard on the edge of the 6 yard box from a long throw, he chested down and snuck in a left-footed shot on the turn through the traffic in front of the goalkeeper but the ball brushed the foot of the upright as it trickled out for a goal kick.
In what was Eagles' only attack of the half, Poggenpoel brought down George in the penalty box and the referee awarded the penalty on the half hour mark. George stepped up to convert the penalty himself but Hawes was equal to the challenge; diving to his right to save the penalty. The referee spotted some encroachment and ordered a re-take and in the second take Hawes changed sides and dove to his left which is exactly where the ball was headed but George put a lot more power in his second bite of the cherry and managed to squeeze it past the keeper for the only goal of the match.
AmaTuks kept up the pressure and in the 42nd minute a cross from Leonard on the left flank found a diving Da Serra on the penalty spot but Mathole was well positioned to punch the ball out and clear the danger. There was no further action as Eagles took the 1-0 lead into the half time break.
In the 55th minute the keeper spilled a cross from October but shots from Chapman and Da Serra were both blocked and after a brief goal mouth scramble the referee paused play to get some medical attention for the keeper.
AmaTuks kept up the pressure and in the 75th minute October's cross missed everyone and found Jackson on the edge of the penalty box on the far side but his volley was blocked by the defender and the ball deflected out for a corner kick. Despite spending the last 20 minutes of the match in the opposition half AmaTuks could not find the equaliser.
The result sees AmaTuks drop one place to 10th position on the log. The team's next assignment is an away fixture on Wednesday 19 April 2017 against Santos at the Athlone Stadium. Kick off is at 15h00.
